Who is a Dependent Child?

A dependent child is an individual under the age of 22 who is not married or in a common-law relationship. In some cases, children over the age of 22 may still qualify as dependents if they are financially dependent on their parents due to a physical or mental condition.

Eligibility Criteria

To sponsor a dependent child, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
  • Demonstrate the ability to support your child financially without relying on social assistance.
  • Provide proof of relationship and the child’s dependent status.

Application Process

  • Gather Documentation: Collect necessary documents including proof of your relationship, the child’s birth certificate, and any medical records if applicable.
  • Submit Application: Complete and submit the sponsorship application package to Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
  • Application Review: IRCC will review your application to ensure all criteria are met.
  • Decision: Once approved, your dependent child will receive their permanent resident status and can join you in Canada.
